Don't know your birth time?

Your moon sign can usually still be found from the date. The ascendant changes about every two hours, so it needs the time. A birth certificate or a family member may have it.

About the ascendant and moon sign

What is the Vedic ascendant (lagna)?

The zodiac sign rising on the eastern horizon at the moment and place you were born. Vedic astrology counts your twelve houses from it, so it decides which part of life each planet's movement touches.

Is the lagna the same as the rising sign?

Yes. Lagna is the Sanskrit name. Vedic astrology measures it in the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24° from the tropical zodiac used in Western astrology, so your Vedic ascendant is often one sign earlier than your Western rising sign. Each is read within its own system.

Why does the ascendant need a birth time?

The ascendant moves through all twelve signs every day, about two hours per sign. Without a time it can't be pinned down. The moon changes sign only every two to three days, so your moon sign can often be given from the date alone.

How is this calculated?

Planet positions come from the Swiss Ephemeris, in the sidereal zodiac with the True Chitra Paksha ayanamsa and whole-sign houses. Your birth time is converted with the time zone rules that applied at your birth place on that date, including daylight saving and wartime changes. It is the same method your Skybond chart uses.

Is my birth data saved?

No. The calculation runs in your browser. The place you type is sent to OpenStreetMap to find the town, and its coordinates to timeapi.io to find the time zone. Nothing is stored unless you create an account.
