Amavasya meaning in the panchang: new Moon tithi

The first fourteen tithi names repeat in both pakshas. The fifteenth tithi of the bright half is purnima; the fifteenth of the dark half is amavasya.

Like every tithi, amavasya spans 12 degrees of Moon minus Sun elongation and can begin or end at any clock hour. See the tithi lesson for end times.
