Functional benefic and malefic: Vedic astrology meaning
Also called: functional benefic, functional malefic, functional nature
Definition
Functional benefic and functional malefic describe whether a planet is read as favourable or unfavourable for a particular chart, based on the houses it rules for a given lagna (Vedic ascendant).
This is separate from a planet's natural nature. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao (PVR)'s analogy: natural nature is like whether a person is inherently good or bad, while functional nature is like whether that person does good or bad to one.
The rules: lords of trines from the lagna are functional benefics; lords of the 3rd, 6th and 11th are functional malefics; a kendra (angular house) lord is a functional malefic if it is a natural benefic and functionally neutral if it is a natural malefic; lords of the 2nd, 8th and 12th are functionally neutral.
Example: for Taurus, Venus rules the 1st and the 6th, and both PVR's table and BPHS list Venus among the malefics for Taurus.
