What Mercury stands for
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS) calls Mercury the speech-giver; P.V.R. Narasimha Rao writes: 'Mercury governs speech'.
Names and the main governance
Mercury's Sanskrit name is Budha, and B.V. Raman also lists Soumya as a name. In the classical list of the nine grahas (the planets of Vedic astrology), BPHS names him Budha, between Mangala (Mars) and Guru (Jupiter).
His main governance is speech. BPHS calls Budha the speech-giver, and PVR agrees: 'Mercury governs speech'.
A piece of sky-lore is attached to this planet. PVR notes that, by tradition, the Buddha avatara of Vishnu is said to have come from Mercury. This is said as tradition, not as astronomy.
Nature and character
Mercury is unusual: it acts as a natural benefic (a helpful planet) when alone or with benefics, and as a malefic when joined by malefics.
Why Mercury changes with company
Mercury's natural nature is not fixed.
PVR states that Mercury is benefic when alone or with more natural benefics, and malefic when joined by more natural malefics. BPHS's version: 'Budh, however, is a malefic, if he joins a malefic'.
PVR explains why this matters: 'because the results given by planets are based on their inherent nature'. The company Mercury keeps shapes what it gives.
Lordship of houses for a given ascendant can also change how a planet behaves. That is called functional nature, covered in a later lesson.
In the planetary cabinet of BPHS, Mercury is the prince, the heir apparent.
The traditional images continue: his colour is grass green, and his presiding deity is Maha Vishnu.
His element is earth, and PVR reads that as governing 'memory, logical abilities etc.'.
His guna (one of the three basic qualities of nature) is rajasik. PVR says Mercury shares this quality with Venus.
BPHS even gives Mercury an abode: a sports ground. PVR comments, 'This description should give one an idea of the nature of planets.' These are traditional images meant to convey character, not literal descriptions.
Where Mercury is strong
Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo, is exalted in Virgo, and is debilitated in Pisces.
Own sign, exaltation and moolatrikona
Dignity describes the strength a planet gains from the sign it occupies.
Mercury's own signs (the signs he rules) are Gemini and Virgo. He is exalted (at his strongest) in Virgo, deepest at 15 degrees, and debilitated (weakest) in Pisces, also deepest at 15 degrees.
His moolatrikona (a special strong stretch of a sign) is Virgo from 15 to 20 degrees (B.V. Raman gives 16 to 20, and Skybond's engine starts it at 16).
The first 15 degrees of Virgo count as exaltation, the last 10 as own sign. A planet is considered strong in its own sign, exaltation sign or moolatrikona.
PVR offers an analogy. The own sign is like home, where one is most natural and comfortable. The moolatrikona is like the office, where one does one's formal duty.
The exaltation sign is like a favourite party or picnic. The debilitation sign is like being stuck at a place one hates.
He extends the analogy to the signs themselves: intelligent communication is Mercury's home (Gemini, the 3rd sign), and intelligent debate is his formal job (Virgo, the 6th sign). Because he loves that job, Virgo is both his moolatrikona and his exaltation sign.
Mercury also has directional strength, called digbala (strength a planet gains in a particular direction or house). BPHS says Mercury is strong in the east, which corresponds to the 1st house, and that he is strong both day and night.
Mercury's friends and enemies
Friends
- Sun
- Venus
Neutral
- Mars
- Jupiter
- Saturn
Enemies
- Moon
Among the planets, Mercury counts the Sun and Venus as friends, and the Moon as its only enemy.
Natural friendships, briefly
Planets have natural relationships with each other, listed in PVR Table 7, drawn from BPHS.
Mercury's friends are the Sun and Venus. Mars, Jupiter and Saturn are neutral to him. The Moon is his enemy.
Why does this matter for your chart? A planet sitting in a sign ruled by a friend is said to be in a friendly sign, which supports it. A planet in an enemy's sign is less comfortable.
The full grading of these relationships is covered in the dignity lesson.
What Mercury signifies
Mercury is the natural significator of speech, learning, memory, scholarship and honours, read from specific houses.
Karakatwas, houses, nakshatras and dasha
A karaka (a significator, literally 'one who causes') is a planet that naturally stands for certain things in life.
Mercury's natural significations (naisargika karakatwas, in PVR Table 16) are read from particular houses: speech from the 2nd house, learning from the 4th, memory, scholarship and students from the 5th, and work, achievements and honours from the 10th.
PVR also lists Mercury as the primary natural significator of the 10th house, the house of work, achievements and honours.
Mercury rules three nakshatras (lunar mansions, divisions of the sky the Moon travels through): Ashlesha, Jyeshtha and Revati.
In Vimshottari dasha, the dasha (planetary period) system PVR calls the most popular, Mercury's mahadasha (main period) lasts 17 years of the 120-year cycle.
A few more facts from the table: Mercury is fast-moving and never gets far from the Sun. B.V. Raman says Mercury 'never gets away more than 28 degrees' from the Sun, and it can be retrograde (appearing to move backwards from Earth's view).
His weekday is Wednesday. The first hora (planetary hour) after sunrise that day is ruled by Mercury.
Mercury in the sample chart
In Skybond's teaching chart, Mercury sits at about 8 degrees Aquarius, in the 8th house from the Cancer ascendant (lagna).
Walking through the teaching chart
This is Skybond's teaching chart, not a real person's, so nothing here is an interpretation. It only shows where things sit and how to read them.
The ascendant (lagna) is the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth; houses are counted from it. Here the lagna is Cancer, so house 1 is Cancer and house 8 is Aquarius.
Mercury sits in Aquarius at about 8 degrees, in the nakshatra Shatabhisha, in the 8th house from the lagna.
For Cancer lagna, Mercury rules houses 3 and 12. PVR's Table 30 lists it, for this lagna, as a functional malefic, meaning its house lordships change how it behaves for this ascendant. Again, this is only what the chart shows, not what it means for anyone.
Reading Mercury in your own chart
Start with four things: Mercury's sign, its house, its dignity, and which houses it rules from your ascendant (lagna).
A traditional sketch, with cautions
BPHS offers a traditional character sketch: 'Budh is endowed with an attractive physique and the capacity to use words with many meanings. He is fond of jokes'.
Treat this as a traditional, general description of the planet, not of any person. B.V. Raman cautions that such descriptions 'are only general in nature and should not be applied hastily'.
Skybond's chart records, for every planet, the sign, house, degree, nakshatra and pada, dignity, whether it is retrograde or combust, and which houses it rules for your lagna. It uses Vimshottari dasha for timing.
One caution worth keeping, from OnlineJyotish: treat interpretations 'as traditional associations rather than promises'.

Which sign is your Mercury in, and is it one of its own signs, Gemini or Virgo?
Show answer
If it is, Mercury sits in its own sign, where PVR says a planet is most natural and comfortable. If not, check whether it sits in its exaltation sign, a friend's sign or an enemy's sign.
Is your Mercury in a friend's sign, a neutral sign or an enemy's sign?
Show answer
Compare its sign's ruler with Mercury's relationships: friends are the Sun and Venus, the Moon is the enemy. A friend's sign is read as a friendly placement.
Which houses does Mercury rule from your ascendant (lagna)?
Show answer
Find your lagna, then count to Gemini and Virgo. Those two houses are the ones Mercury carries for you, and their themes colour how its significations are read.
