Karaka meaning in Vedic astrology: significator of a matter
Also called: karakas, karakatwa, karakatwas, significator, naisargika karaka
Definition
Karaka means 'one who causes'. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao (PVR) explains that the karaka of a matter is its significator, the one who causes events related to that matter.
Each planet carries a set of natural significations, called naisargika karakatwas. PVR's table of natural significations lists each planet's matters alongside the house each is read from: the Sun signifies the soul and the father, and the Moon the mind and the mother.
Skybond's planet lessons follow the same approach, listing each planet's significations with the house each is read from.
Alongside these natural significators, PVR also uses chara karakas, variable significators of the people in one's life. These leave out Ketu, because 'Ketu stands for moksha (emancipation)'.
