2nd house in Vedic astrology: meaning and significations
The 2nd house in Vedic astrology is called Dhana bhava, and it traditionally shows wealth, family, speech, voice and food. It is the 2nd sign counted from your Vedic ascendant (lagna), and Jupiter is its natural significator (karaka).

What the 2nd house shows
PVR (§7.2)
wealth, family, speech, food
BPHS ch. 11
wealth, food, family
The 2nd house (Dhana bhava) traditionally covers wealth, family, speech and food. Two classical texts list its matters in slightly different ways.
The two classical lists, compared
In whole-sign houses, the 2nd house is the 2nd sign counted from the lagna, the sign rising on the eastern horizon at birth.
P.V.R. Narasimha Rao (PVR), author of Vedic Astrology: An Integrated Approach, lists these matters for the 2nd house: wealth, assets, family, speech, voice and food.
Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra (BPHS, R. Santhanam's translation), chapter 11, gives the 2nd house, among other things: wealth, grains (food and the like), family, and metals and precious stones.
The two lists overlap on wealth, family and food, and differ on the rest. That is normal. PVR notes that each house shows many matters, and that picking the right one for a given reading 'becomes easier with experience'.
The house itself is a container of themes, not a single prediction.
Jupiter, the house's significator
Jupiter is the natural significator (karaka) of the 2nd house in PVR's Table 15, standing for family and wealth.
What a karaka is and why Jupiter
A karaka is a planet that signifies a matter. Every house has a natural significator, a planet traditionally linked to that house's themes regardless of the chart.
PVR's Table 15 gives Jupiter (Guru in Sanskrit) as the primary naisargika karaka, or natural significator, of the 2nd house, for family and wealth.
Karaka planets are also useful for counting. PVR illustrates with the example that 'the 4th house from Moon shows mother', meaning houses can be counted not only from the ascendant but also from a karaka planet.
Where the house sits in the chart's groups
The 2nd house is a panaphara, belongs to the artha aim of life, and sits in the invisible half of the chart.
Panaphara, artha and the invisible half
Houses in Vedic astrology are sorted into groups, and each group colours how a house's matters tend to show up. The 2nd house belongs to three of them.
- Panaphara (succedant): the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses.
- Artha trikona: the artha triangle, connected to artha, one of the four aims of life (purusharthas). Artha covers money and career. The other aims are dharma (duty, righteousness), kaama (desire) and moksha (liberation).
- Invisible half: houses 1 to 6. PVR says houses in the visible half (7th to 12th) 'give results that can be seen in the material world', while those in the invisible half (1st to 6th) 'give results that cannot be easily seen'.
PVR's quick summary of the groups is worth keeping in mind: kendras (corner houses) relate to sustenance and vital activity, trikonas (trines) to prosperity and flourishing, upachayas (houses of growth) to gains and growth, and dusthanas (difficult houses) to setbacks and obstacles. The 2nd house is in none of these four groups.
Its lord and how it is judged
The 2nd lord is the planet that rules the sign sitting in your 2nd house, so it changes with the ascendant.
How the 2nd lord is treated
Every sign has a ruling planet, so every house has a lord: the planet that rules the sign placed in it. Because the sign in your 2nd house depends on your lagna, the 2nd lord changes from chart to chart.
What do the texts say about this lord? BPHS chapter 34, on house lords, treats the lords of the 12th and 8th with a note that their results 'will depend on their association'; it gives no separate rule for the 2nd lord there.
PVR fills the gap with a functional classification: the lords of the 2nd, 8th and 12th houses are functionally neutral. Unlike some house lords, they are not labelled benefic or malefic by house alone.
As for the house itself, BPHS chapter 11 (verses 14 to 16) gives a general rule for judging any house: 'Predict prosperity of the Bhava, which is yuti with, or drishtied by a benefic'. In plain words, a house does well when it shares a sign with (yuti, conjunction) or receives an aspect from (drishti) a benefic, a planet of supportive nature. A house also does well when its lord is in the 10th house or strong, and is harmed when its lord is with a malefic or with the lords of the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th or 12th.
The 2nd house also gets its own chapter in BPHS, chapter 13, titled 'Effects of Dhan Bhava'.
Reading the 2nd house in a chart
In Skybond's teaching chart, the 2nd house is Leo holding the Moon, and its lord, the Sun, sits in the 7th house. Here is how to read that.
Walking through the sample chart
The chart below is Skybond's recurring teaching chart, not a real person's. It has a Cancer lagna, so the houses are counted with Cancer as the 1st house.
With whole-sign houses, each house is one whole sign. The 2nd house is therefore Leo, the 2nd sign counted from Cancer.
Leo holds the Moon. Its lord is the Sun, since the Sun rules Leo, and the Sun sits in the 7th house of this chart.
Two things to notice. First, the sign (Leo) and its lord (the Sun) describe the house alongside the planet in it. An empty house still has a sign and a lord.
Second, houses can be counted from more than one reference point. They can also be counted from the Moon (this is called Chandra lagna). The same sign can be the 2nd house from one reference and a different house from another.
Skybond's articles read each planet by its sign, its house from your lagna and from your Moon, its dignity and the houses it rules.
A caution before you apply any of this: B.V. Raman, in Hindu Predictive Astrology, warns that such descriptions 'are only general in nature and should not be applied hastily'. The lists on this page describe the house in the abstract, not any particular person.

FAQ
What does the 2nd house rule in Vedic astrology?
Traditionally it rules wealth, assets, family, speech, voice and food, according to PVR. BPHS chapter 11 adds grains (food) and metals and precious stones to the list.
Why is the 2nd house called Dhana bhava?
It is the house's classical Sanskrit name, and wealth opens both PVR's and BPHS's lists of its matters. The Santhanam translation of BPHS writes it as Dhan Bhava.
Which planet signifies the 2nd house?
Jupiter, per PVR's Table 15, as the natural significator (karaka) for family and wealth. A karaka is a planet linked to a house's themes in every chart.
Does an empty 2nd house mean anything?
Yes. An empty house still has a sign and a lord, and both are read. In Skybond's teaching chart, the 2nd house is Leo with only the Moon in it, and its lord, the Sun, sits in the 7th house.
