The work that no longer fits
Something in your public life is dissolving—not dramatically, but noticeably. The roles you've outgrown are becoming harder to wear.
The title still says what it always said. The desk is in the same place. But something about showing up has started to feel like wearing a costume you can't quite zip up anymore.
This is the quiet part of a career chapter. Not the crisis with a resignation letter and a door slam. More like a slow loosening. The ambition that used to pull you forward now feels like someone else's idea of who you should become. You're doing the work, maybe even doing it well. But the point of it has gone slippery.
Recognition lands differently now. Praise feels hollow, or it arrives and evaporates before you can feel it. The corner office, the follower count, the line on the résumé—whatever your version of arrival was, it's sitting in your hand like a key to a door you no longer want to open.
There's something else happening underneath. Home, family, the private self—these are pulling at your attention with an urgency that competes with everything public. The part of you that tends roots and closes doors and lets silence collect is asking for time it hasn't had in years. The tension isn't subtle. Every hour given to one feels stolen from the other, and you're not sure which direction counts as loyalty anymore.
You might be withdrawing without meaning to. Skipping the networking event. Letting the email sit unanswered. Not out of rebellion. More like conservation. Your energy has become honest in a way it wasn't before, and it simply won't flow toward performance the way it used to.
The question isn't what you're building. It's whether you still believe in the building.
Some people around you won't understand this. They see the trajectory, the momentum, the sensible next step. They can't feel the hollowness you're navigating. That's fine. You don't need to explain it yet. You're in a period of unbecoming, and unbecoming doesn't require witnesses.
What wants to fall away will fall away. Not through your rejection, but through your disinterest. The opportunities that don't align stop feeling like missed chances and start feeling like clutter you didn't have to sort. This is the gift of this stretch: clarity through exhaustion. You stop chasing what you never actually wanted once the chasing itself becomes too costly.
There's a practical posture here, and it's simpler than the feeling suggests. Do the work that is genuinely in front of you. Don't manufacture meaning, but don't abandon craft either. Let the structure hold while you figure out whether the structure serves. Show up without pouring yourself into the performance of showing up.
The purpose that survives this period won't be louder. It will be quieter, more stubborn, less interested in being understood. You don't need to name it yet. You only need to stop pretending the old name still fits.
