Upachaya meaning in Vedic astrology: houses of growth

Also called: upachayas, upachaya houses

Definition

Upachaya is the group made up of the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th houses of a birth chart.

Upachayas are counted from any reference point in the chart. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao (PVR) holds that houses that are upachayas from a reference show forces causing gains and growth to the matters it signifies. For example, the upachayas from the arudha lagna (a calculated point that shows how one is seen by the world) show improvement of status.

The house groups overlap: the 6th house is both an upachaya and a dusthana (house of setback), and the 10th house is both an upachaya and a kendra (angular house).
