Dusthana meaning in Vedic astrology: houses of setback

Also called: dusthanas, trik sthana, trik sthanas, trik houses

Definition

Dusthana (also called trik sthana or trik house) is the group made up of the 6th, 8th and 12th houses of a birth chart.

Dusthanas are read from any reference point in the chart. P.V.R. Narasimha Rao (PVR) holds that houses that are dusthanas from a reference show forces causing setbacks to the matters it signifies, so the group is summarised as setbacks and obstacles.

The same idea appears in Light on Life: the 6th, 8th or 12th house counted from any house often causes trouble to that house.

PVR adds that a functional malefic (a planet read as unfavourable for a given lagna because of the houses it rules) placed in the 3rd house or in the dusthanas brings good results 'by spoiling the significations of the bad houses'. And if a dusthana itself is weak, obstacles are easily overcome.
